If you mean supporting yourself financially, all the arts are that way. In terms of the actually work, or lack thereof during times of droughts of inspiration, I would say my years of teaching were much harder and a year of caregiving people unable to wipe their asses, harder than that.
When you think of the rise of civilization and how we have classes of people able to do the more refined work, it is because we are standing upon those who will work the menial jobs. But hey, with AI coming to the fore, robots will be working the fields and cleaning our homes, and we will all be artists of some sort. Shit, I forgot, AI is doing that too!
