I forgot what saint I read about who worshiped a deity every day. When he was confronted, probably by Muslims, why he was worshipping an idol, he simply smashed it. It was just a point of focus for him, which is how I see any representation of the Divine. Another story comes to mind of a saint who was admonished for sitting in from of a lingam with his feet pointed at. So he shifted his position and wherever his feet pointed a lingam appeared. Where is there not God?
